Night has fallen. Beneath the starry sky, danger lurks. The enemy's artillery
is closing in on your bunker. Skill at gauging angle, speed, wind, and gravity
will determine whether you are still around in the morning. Don't fall asleep
tonight!
PREPARING FOR BATTLE
When you boot up ON TARGET, you will see the Game Configuration screen. Use
the up and down arrow keys to select an option, and the left and right arrow
keys to cycle between settings:
Video Mode: EGA or VGA
Audio Mode: Sound or No Sound
Wind Factor: None, Steady, or Variable
Game Speed: 1 (slow) to 99 (fast)
Flight Path: Show or No Show
Opponent: Computer (Poor, Fair, or Good) or Human
Audio Mode, Game Speed, Flight Path, and Computer skill level can also be
adjusted on the battlefield.
For more information on each option, press the [F1] Help key. You can quit
ON TARGET at any time by pressing the [ESC] key.
Before beginning a battle, select 1 or 2 human players on the Score Sheet &
Player Selection screen. You must add at least 1 or 2 players to the list
before you can play for the first time. To add a player, press the [INSERT]
key, enter a name (up to 10 characters), and press [ENTER]. To select a
player, use the up and down arrow keys to highlight a name and press [ENTER].
To remove a player from the list, highlight the name and press [DELETE].
The first player selected will be on the left side of the field, while the
second player or the computer will be on the right.
THE BATTLEFIELD
Overview
It is night on the battlefield. The stars are shining and the moon is up.
(Turn off the lights in your room to enhance the onscreen effect.)
ON TARGET battles are grouped into sets, with 10 battle rounds in each set.
Each round uses different mterrain and wind conditions, and lasts until one
of the gun emplacements is blown up or one of the players runs out of troops.
A perfect artillery shot will blow up the gun emplacement. A less-than-perfect
shot will scare off or kill some troops. You score points by blowing up the
opponent's cannon as well as for the number of troops killed when the cannon
is hit.
The Control Panel
The top of the battlefield screen contains the Control Panel. You can use
these function keys to toggle between different settings:
[F2] Computer skill Poor, Fair or Good
[F3] Reset the round with a different terrain
[F4] Sound On or Off
[F5] Change Color
[F6] Flight Path Shown or Not Shown
[ESC] Return to the Game Configuration screen
You can adjust the Game Speed by pressing the [-] or [+] keys or by clicking
on the - or + symbols at either end of the Game Speed bar in the middle of
the Control Panel.
Wind Conditions (speed and direction) are displayed in the top center of
the Control Panel.
CANNON CONTROL
The cannon has two adjustable controls: speed and angle. You will need to
adjust these to score an accurate hit on your opponent. You must land a shot
in the exact middle of your opponent's gun emplacement to destroy it and
end the round.
The mouse pointer will point to the left or right to indicate whose turn it is.
Angle is adjustable from 10 to 150 degrees. Remember, 90 degrees is straight
up, and anything greater than 90 degrees will fly backwards. If the wind is
very strong toward your opponent, a backward shot may be useful.
Speed can be adjusted from 100 to 999 miles per hour. Most cannon shots are
effective between 200 and 600 MPH.
If you are using a mouse, click to the left of either Angle or Speed to
decrease it. Click on the right of either Angle or Speed to increase it.
Shoot your cannon by clicking on "Shoot Weapon."
If you are using a keyboard, use the up and down arrow keys to select Angle
or Speed, then use the left and right arrow keys to increase or decrease
them. Press the SPACEBAR to shoot your cannon.
SCORING
Each round is scored based on the number of troops killed and cannons
destroyed. Each set is scored by averaging all 10 rounds in a set.
Player rankings are updated only after all 10 rounds in a set have been
completed.
